Tosca Ristorante (21 Jan, Fri, 5:30pm)

Washington, DC Winter Restaurant Week in January 2011

While I’m not an Italian food junkie, I wanted to try an Italian restaurant and I’d heard of Tosca, it’s #33 of the Top 100 Restaurants in Washington DC; not an easy place to get into on a weekend but I managed to secure an early reservation. The host/hostess was very friendly and actually allowed me to sit at the table and wait for my friends. Normally, this is unheard of in DC; you aren’t allowed to be seated until the entire party is there.

I waited for my friends to arrive while sipping on hot Jasmine tea. Perfect after braving the cold wind we were experiencing. The atmosphere is quiet, even when the dining area is filled, I felt as though I needed to be quiet and on my best behavior. This isn’t a bad thing! The interior was very nice with pale pastels, thick carpeting, and heavy drapery.

The wait staff was friendly and funny. Maybe it was the fact that our table was made up of three very tall women but the waiter seem to be there if we looked up and had the best suggestions for each of us. He seemed to know what each of us wanted.

I was torn between a few items on the menu and I’m pleased with my choices:
Cappellacci pasta filled with pumpkin puree and Provolone cheese with a brown butter sauce on a salisy puree. Herb crusted Dorade with spelt ragu, artichokes and olives in a lemon-caper sauce and the Flourless chocolate cake with warm Nutella sauce and hazelnut gelato.

I couldn’t tell you what my friends ordered but I do know it was Swordfish and SeaBass; fantastic is all I can say. We sampled each other’s food and truly enjoyed our meals.

I’m not sure who had the better dessert. The Tiramisu was unlike any other I’ve ever tried and it was wonderful. The Flourless chocolate cake was rich and the Nutella sauce and Hazeletnut gelato was perfection. The green apple sorbet with fresh berries was tasty and refreshing bout would be wonderful in spring or summer.
