Washington, DC Winter Restaurant Week in January 2011
I was thrilled to get reservations at Vidalia; it’s listed as the #12 restaurant. Everyone raves about the food so to get a Saturday evening reservation made my entire day!
We arrived a few minutes early and were immediately seated (fantastic) and that’s about the best service we received all evening.
Pro: The food was really good (not great). I splurged on the Vidalia’s Crab Cake: jumbo lump crab, tasso ham, sweet corn maque choux, crab butter and Potato Crusted Fluke with sautéed shrimp, cauliflower purée, marcona almonds, brown butter emulsion. The best dessert ever…. spiced poached pear; coconut pound cake, port reduction, cinnamon foam!!! It really was that good; I had a moment:)
Con: Their vegetarian menu is very limiting and shouldn’t be when you consider how many vegetarians there are in the world. My friend could only have salad and the Blue Plate (which was not good). Really? It’s Restaurant Week and you want to encourage people to enjoy themselves and come back.
Con: Our waiter was horrible. Empty water glasses, empty soda glass, ignored us the entire evening; the bus boy gave us more attention. There we sat in between courses with no water, no soda, no bread to nibble on and watching him go to other tables. I wasn't happy. The man wouldn't even look us in the eye.
We mentioned the horrible service to the host but I doubt anything will come of it. The host apologized and said “hopefully you will return and it will be better experience.”
Not bloody likely.
